The current focus of my practice explores the natural world. I make circular compositing as a meditation on the beauty of the flora around me in the present. I’m aware my work may be making a record for the future of loss in the natural world.
I look back 200 years to the magnificent Flora Graeca, a survey of eastern Mediterranean flora at a time of botanical discovery (1806 -1846 by Oxford botanist, John Sibthorp). As I study the nearly 1000 hand-colored engravings of the 10 volumes of Flora Graeca. I am fascinated by the imprint of time in ghost-like oil stains from the engraving ink bleeding onto the blank pages facing the engravings. I photograph the stains and print them as lithographs, wondering if some of the plants depicted, have now, in fact, become ghosts - endangered and disappearing – a foreboding of things to come.
