Projects in Progress
Ghosts is a series of prints I’m working on, based on Flora Graeca, a rare botanical publication with nearly 1000 hand-colored engravings of flora of the eastern Mediterranean based on two expeditions made to Ottoman Greece during the last quarter of eighteenth century by botanist John Sibthorp and the botanical illustrator Ferdinand Bauer. Only 30 copies were published (1806-1840), making it one of the rarest botanical books ever compiled and the most expensive. I am fascinated by the imprint of time on the 10 volumes of Flora Graeca, made inadvertently over 200+ years, as the ink of the engravings, has slowly stained the facing pages of the closed volumes. I select images from the ghost-like stains to transpose into lithograph prints, wondering if any of these plants, over time, will, in fact, become ghosts—endangered and disappearing
Meditations, my recent botanical cyanotypes on cloth are based on Mapping the Walk, my archive of drawings depicting the wealth of flora growing along a single footpath on Kea Island, made from 2011-2016, in support of the historic preservation of the footpath. In Meditations my interest has moved from protest to meditation on our place in nature, using circular mandala-like image: cycles of growth over the eons, cycles of life.
